Aboriginal Air Services

Aboriginal Air Services was an umbrella management company for 4 separate airlines owned by the Aboriginal people of Central Australia. The structure comprises Ngaanyatjarra Air (WA based people), Ngurrajuta Air (NT based people), Janami Air (NT based people form the Walpri tribe) and PY Air (SA based people).

These four separately owned entities had come together over the past years to form this consortium, now known as Aboriginal Air Services. This service was fully owned by the Aboriginal people where everyone who flies pays an airfare, or are charged for freight services. The aim to provide a cost efficient, safe and reliable user pay service to the remote communities of Central Australia. Set up as a not for profit organization, with any surpluses made being turned back into the business to off set running costs or reduce airfares alike.

The PC12 was purchased by the Ngaanyatjarra people in 1997. At the time there was a demand to travel exAlice Springs to Kalgoorlie and onto Perth. Since the introduction though the demand for Perth had declined and was no longer operating this leg. The aircraft at that stage was used primarily for closed charter with regular flights twice weekly to Warburton and Kalgoorlie. Up grading these runs to an RPT service establishing itself as the first operator of a PC12 on this type of service in Australia.

Northern Territory Air Services was formed from the engineering division of Aboriginal Air Services The Maintenance division was Aboriginal Aircraft Maintenance & Service. Now Alice Aircraft Maintenance & Service.
